□ KoPHWA in partnership with Airport Railroad, conducted a joint campaign on September 23 at Geomam Station to promote expanded consideration for pregnant passengers on public transportation.

□ Pregnant women may face physical and mental challenges such as morning sickness, excessive fatigue, and depression due to hormonal changes during pregnancy. Excessive exertion or stress can increase the risk of miscarriage, making understanding and consideration for pregnant women essential.

○ According to the 「2024 Survey on Awareness and Practices of Support for Pregnant Women」 conducted by KoPHWA, 67.7% of pregnant women reported having experienced consideration from strangers during pregnancy—an increase of 21.8 percentage points compared to 45.9% in 2020. Additionally, the most needed form of assistance in daily life was “giving up seats on public transportation (buses, subways, etc.)” at 29.6%. Among those who used priority seats for pregnant women, 73.1% cited “ordinary passengers not vacating the seat after sitting down” as the main inconvenience.

□ Based on these survey results, the campaign provided various programs aimed at helping Airport Railroad passengers understand and support pregnant passengers. These included pregnancy experience activities, surveys on awareness of consideration for pregnant women and stroller users, and guidance on courtesy practices for pregnant women.

○ One pregnant passenger who participated in the campaign shared, “Recently, I have noticed many priority seats for pregnant women being left vacant, and more people voluntarily giving up their seats in regular sections, which I truly appreciate. I hope such campaigns continue so that all citizens, including pregnant women, can use public transportation comfortably with mutual consideration.”

□ KoPHWA President, Samsik Lee stated, “KoPHWA has been conducting annual campaigns in collaboration with subway operators, including Airport Railroad, to promote support for pregnant women. We hope this campaign will serve as an opportunity for a culture of respect and consideration for pregnant women to naturally take root in everyday life, including public transportation.”
